It Will Be a Pleasure Working Wiht You Again

I don't actually practice a lot of self-publicity online.  Maybe information technology'south part of my British nature that, whilst I understand the clear benefits, I would much rather others advocate for my work than for me to do it.  And if they don't, well I simply must do meliorate!  For once though, I am breaking rank and opting to requite myself a little LinkedIn pat on the back.

I recently kicked off a couple of projects with teams that I take worked with before and I was struck by the wave of positive responses I received from them:

  • "It'south great to be working with yous again!"
  • "After working with you lot before, I am happy that this important piece of piece of work is in your easily"
  • "We are and so glad and relieved to have you working on this"

This led me to take a break and appreciate the position I am in and the great client relationships that I accept. As I reflected further, more thoughts came to me around the journey I have been on, and then I decided to capture these in this article.

Ivy Leaf Innovation is a new business organisation, started in January 2018. It's called Ivy Foliage because ivy always finds a way through. That really sums upwards my arroyo to my work; drop me into the toughest of projects and I will find a way through to clarity, meaning and action. Or in others words and to quote one of my closest clients "Hayley I can rely on you and you get shit washed!"

When I kicked things off in January, it was a daunting prospect to say the least. You lot know the story… build your career in a big Global organisation then eventually leave to offset upwards on your ain. Not an easy decision. I loved my chore and my visitor were incredibly supportive of my career, but sometimes y'all have to make a leap and that is what I did. I'd exist lying if I said I hadn't wondered if I would make information technology and if I was at all proficient enough to do this.

Six months in and I haven't sabbatum nonetheless for a moment, delivering a varied portfolio of challenging and rewarding projects for my clients.  I had cypher desire to set up a big bureau at this phase. My two primary objectives when setting upwardly my business were:

one)   Do work that I love and can exercise really well.

2)   Take more than flexibility to be effectually for my immature children.

That's it. Unproblematic.

I measure myself on this every twenty-four hours.  Existence clear on what success means to me has been the toughest battle and too the biggest triumph of this whole journeying so far.

With this in heed, I set upward Ivy Leafage based on a network model.  This means that I focus on the piece of work where I bring the best value and then utilise my network when projects require extra resource or skills that I do not have. It'southward common from all sides.  I get to do the work I love and that I am proficient at with the maximum possible flexibility; my network receive work from me and I from them and the customer gets the best dream team on every project. Result.

I am fortunate to have worked with an amazing group of agency partners from the beginning of my career, agencies who are at the top of their game and also lovely to piece of work with and have a beer with!  They have supported me in different ways throughout my career and more recently in setting up my concern; going to a higher place and across to help me and for this I am and volition always be eternally grateful.

The focus of my work is design and innovation management.  I assistance companies work out why, where and how they need to innovate. I help them to ascertain and communicate their strategies, to translate innovation objectives into design projects and atomic number 82 teams through the front end end of the innovation process.

Another disquisitional aspect of my work is capability development, an area that I am incredibly passionate about. Afterward starting my career not knowing what to call myself, in a job where I had to fight for every opportunity because people didn't go what I did and find means to get the development I needed, I experience a stiff duty to pay it frontward.

From when I led an in-house squad through to the work I do now, I strive to observe ways to make development meaningful and actionable to the individual within the context in which they piece of work; translating generic macro evolution competencies into something that ways something to them in their job with the coaching to follow through.  The result? Visible, meaningful progress and individuals with increased confidence that become on to achieve bigger and meliorate things. That definitely counts as work that I love.

It's not all been plain sailing though, there have of course been things that I accept found challenging. It'due south hard non having and IT department to call up when I need them, and I really don't bask business admin.  Information technology'due south a pocket-sized price to pay for the broader benefits.

On a deeper level, the biggest shift for me has been in adjusting to not existence the internal decision maker.  When I worked in-firm, I would lead global and regional innovation strategy programs, liaising directly with cardinal stakeholders and setting the direction of the work.  That is dissimilar now, whilst I accept very strong client relationships that sometimes blur the boundaries between being internal and external, it is unlike and that has taken a piddling getting used to.  The temptation is always in that location to get dorsum and who knows maybe one day I volition.  For now, I keep coming back to my 2 objectives to guide me whenever opportunities come up my manner.

I'm positive well-nigh entering into the next six months of this journey.  I have then much thinking that I want to share, I simply need to find the right way to do it!  Stay tuned for that.
